A mock travel tryout for 10U, 12U, 14U and 18U will be held Saturday, May 5th from 5:00-7:00 at Memorial Pool Field 1.  8Us should not attend the mock tryout. The intent is to put the girls through a practice travel tryout so they know what to expect, how to prepare, and how to participate in a GSLW travel tryout.

Travel Expectations:
Those selected to participate on travel teams will practice up to 2 times per week from 5/21-6/22.   From 6/25 through 7/27, each team will have 2-3 games and 1-2 practices per week.  Teams will also participate in one weekend tournament in late June or July.  Players are expected to make practices and games.   If you cannot make nearly all practices and games due to other sport conflicts, extended summer vacations or any other reason, please notify the GSLW Travel Director in advance of tryouts to determine if a travel roster spot is appropriate.   Players who make a travel team and cannot meet travel expectations (without prior notice before travel team selection) may be removed from travel teams.

Travel teams are highly competitive, play to win, and are not required to provide equal playing time. The GSLW will field competitive "A" and “B” teams at each age level as long as player interest and skill level meet required levels.

Travel Coaches:
The GSLW will provide a paid professional head coach for each travel team.  Assistant coaches will be chosen from a pool of college softball players, current Westfield HS softball players, and current GSLW rec coaches.  Parents can nominate rec coaches by emailing the GSLW Travel Director at traveldirector@westfieldsoftball.org.  Rec coaches can volunteer by emailing the GSLW Travel Director.  All coaching selections will be made by the GSLW Board.

Summer Travel Overview:
Travel teams play in the Parkway Invitational Softball League ("PISL"), which is a league comprised of teams representing towns in Union, Middlesex, Essex, Morris, and Somerset counties.   “A” teams are capped at 12 girls, “B” teams are capped at 15 girls.  Not all girls who tryout are guaranteed to make a travel team.   Safety, ability and capacity will determine the number of girls selected.   Travel tryouts are one data point for selection.  Other data points include but are not restricted to rec league play, past travel play and commitment to the team.   Evaluations with be made by professional coaches and members of the GSLW Board.  Travel team selection is the sole responsibility of the GSLW Board.

Lightning Alarm System

As a reminder while the lightning alarm system works at Memorial Pool after 8 pm the siren will not sound.  Only the warning strobe operates.

Always check here for updates, including weather related cancellations.  For updates on the status of Union County Park fields, please call the Union County hot line on 908-352-8410. The Park Commission posts field updates at 2:00 pm.

WEATHER ADVISORY
The Town of Westfield relies on a lightning detection system to automatically activate Siren Stations to warn people at various locations when lightning is detected within 10 miles.
Lighting Alarm:
Wave Siren Stations sound a “Horn-Siren-Horn-Siren” audible tone for about 12 seconds. The Strobe Light attached to the Siren Station then illuminates to indicate that a Lightning Alarm condition exists.
Lightning All-Clear:
The All-Clear sounds when no lightning is detected for 30 minutes within 10 miles of the lightning detection sensor. Wave Siren Stations sound a “Horn Intermittent” audible tone for about 12 seconds. The Strobe Light attached to the Siren Station then extinguishes.
Some, but not all fields are equipped with lightning alarms. All players, coaches, and parents must clear the fields immediately when lightning is detected. Fields must be cleared if lightning or thunder is observed, even if the alarm does not sound.
Carry-on, Carry-off!

Help us keep our fields Safe and Clean

Whatever items you carry-on to the fields you must carry-off the fields. Players, parents and coaches, you must pick up and carry off all your trash before leaving the field and place it in the garbage containers or recycle it.
